Morality and the Ten Commandments

some commandments some more commandments

Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.... Thou shalt not bow down thyself nor serve them...
Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain.
Remember the sabbath day to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work
Honour thy father and thy mother that thy days may be long upon the land...
Thou shalt not kill
Thou shalt not commit adultery
Thou shalt not steal
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house/wife/manservant/maidservant/ox/ass anything else.

The Ten Commandments.
Basically, "Worship ME, and be nice to each other". We've all heard them, we all know what they're all about.
But come on! Do you really need a pan-dimensional mega-being to tell you to be nice to each other? I mean, ooh it must have taken God years to think up the commandments, mustn't it?

The Ten Commandments, supposedly some divine laws that humanity simply

  • Could not get by without
  • Could not have thought up by itself
are just plain, simple COMMON SENSE! (apart from, obviously, the ones about worshipping God)

These are the sort of things that sensible, rational human beings should know are the way to behave. Do people who have never read the Bible think "Oh, hey, I don't like that person, I think I'll murder him - but wait, is murder Right or Wrong? I really can't figure it out for myself. Duh..."

Atheists are often accused of being amoral or immoral - somehow inferior in terms of morality to theists. In my experience, many atheists base their morality on what they consider to be acceptable to their society. "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you" is a quite reasonable way of determining what is Good or Bad :-
Would I like someone to murder me, lie to me or steal from me? No!
Then I shall not do that to anyone else.

Really, can you imagine what Moses must have thought when God gave him those stone tablets with the Commandments on? "Don't kill? Don't steal? Don't covet? But of course! Why didn't we mere mortals think of this? No wonder our society is going to the dogs! Thanks, God, I don't know what we would have done without You to point us in the right direction."
