"There's no way anybody could survive a crash of that magnitude. We need to pray for revival in the United States, because we are vulnerable. It's not a missile seal that we need right now. We need a prayer shield throughout this nation. And I'm asking this nation, the Christians of America particularly, to pray to ask God for revival in America.

Dobsons Pray God Will Bring Good Out of Evil
(Colorado Springs, Colorado-AP) — The president of the Christian group Focus on the Family says he's praying that God can bring some good out of the horror of yesterday's terrorist attacks.

Dr. James Dobson says he's praying "that the Lord will use this horrible experience to draw us to Himself." Dobson added that he's afraid that as Americans, "we have become self-sufficient and arrogant in recent years — as though we have no need of divine help."

The evangelical Christian leader says that now is the time "to pull our loved ones close, and to turn to the God of our fathers."

His wife, Shirley Dobson — who chairs the National Day of Prayer Task Force — called on Americans to join in prayer vigils in town squares and churches across the nation.

Why does God allow innocent people to suffer?

The sufferings of unsaved men are often used by the Holy Spirit to cause them to realize their needs of salvation and to turn to Christ in repentance and faith. The sufferings of Christians should always be the means of developing a stronger dependence on God and a more Christ-like character, if they are properly "exercised thereby" (Hebrews 12:11).

Thus, God is loving and merciful even when, "for the present," He allows trials and sufferings to come in our lives.

Examples of courage and self-sacrifice by police, fire, and rescue teams in New York and Washington abound in times like these. Military officers and civilians risked their lives in the Pentagon to save their fellows. Recruiting offices are reporting abnormally high calls from motivated young people. Americans are flying their flags, kneeling in prayer, asking God to heal our land. There is a terrible beauty in the bond that draws us together as Americans. How different is this spirit from the idolatry of self that has been preached by some for far too long. Americans are not rising up to defend the right to slaughter the unborn. They are not sacrificing their lives so homosexuals can marry. They are not paying the ultimate price so pornographers can peddle their smut. In such difficult days, Americans are sacrificing for those things that promote the common good—faith, family, freedom. Now is the time for Americans to summon the best that is within us. We need that strength that comes from placing God first, others second, and self last. Let there be an end to the idolatry of self.

Rev Falwell said on the "The 700 Club" programme that gays, pagans and feminists had spiritually broken the US and made "God mad". This he said resulted in the attacks.

"I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way - all of them who have tried to secularize America - I point the finger in their face and say, ‘You helped this happen," said Falwell who holds the post of chancellor of Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia.

His comments have been condemned by gay groups around the world as distasteful.

The Rev. Jerry Falwell and religious broadcaster Pat Robertson said the United States was vulnerable to this week's terrorist attacks because the nation has insulted God and lost divine protection.

``God Almighty is lifting his protection from us,'' Robertson said in a four-page statement issued Thursday by his Christian Broadcasting Network.

``We have imagined ourselves invulnerable and have been consumed by the pursuit of ... health, wealth, material pleasures and sexuality.''

Falwell, a Baptist minister and chancellor of Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., said Thursday on Robertson's religious TV program ``The 700 Club'' that he blames the attacks on pagans, abortionists, feminists, homosexuals, the American Civil Liberties Union (news - web sites) and the People for the American Way.

``All of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say, 'You helped this happen,''' Falwell said.

He added later, ``God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve.''

``Jerry, that's my feeling,'' Robertson responded. ``I think we've just seen the antechamber to terror. We haven't even begun to see what they can do to the major population.''

Elizabeth Birch, executive director of the Human Rights Campaign, a gay rights organization, said Friday the comments of Falwell and Robertson ``were stunning. They were beyond contempt. They were irresponsible at best, and a deliberate attempt to manipulate the nation's anger at worst.''

Robertson, who founded the Christian Coalition and unsuccessfully ran for the 1988 Republican presidential nomination, said in his statement Thursday that Americans have insulted God by allowing abortion and ``rampant Internet pornography.'' He also chided the U.S. Supreme Court (news - web sites) for, among other things, limiting prayer in public schools.

``We have a court that has essentially stuck its finger in God's eye,'' Robertson wrote. ``We have insulted God at the highest level of our government. Then, we say, 'Why does this happen?'''

Robertson was among conservative religious figures who backed President Bush (news - web sites) in last year's election. A White House official called the remarks ``inappropriate'' and added, ``the president does not share those views.''

Falwell said Friday that he didn't mean to blame any one group.

``But I'd say this is a wake up call from God,'' Falwell told The Associated Press. ``I feel our spiritual defenses are down. If we don't repent, then more events might happen in the future.''

Bill Leonard, dean of the Wake Forest University Divinity School in Winston-Salem, N.C., compared Falwell's and Robertson's comments with militant Islamic rhetoric that has been condemned worldwide.

``It trivializes theology. It trivializes the dead,'' Leonard said.

Yes, we can put up a nuclear shield, but they are not coming in with missiles. We can beef up marshals on airplanes, but then they will come in with car bombs. There is always some way they can get at us. The means of these rogue states are awesome.

Yes, we will mobilize now and our country is moving together. But I want to say as firmly as I can, the Scripture for this time is -- “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, pray, seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin and heal their land.”

Now, I am filled with compassion. It just tears my heart when I think of the families of these suffering. But I want to say as surely as I am sitting here today, this is only a foretaste, a little warning, of what is going to happen.

We have not seen the massive destruction of life in our urban centers that can take place with sarin gas and with the biological and chemical warfare that is available to these rogue people, not to mention, suitcase nuclear bombs that they probably have available as well. We must come back to God as a people.

So what we say to you today is, if you are not right with God then get your life right with God. Think of the things in your life that are wrong. Think of the careless indifference. Think of the poor who you could have helped. Think of the Scripture you have ignored. Think of the time you should have been spending in prayer, when you were watching television or focusing on pornography or tuned into the Internet. Think of the things you have done in your own life and think of the indifference to the sin of this nation that you have just passed by and said, "Well, that is just the way it is. We have to have freedom." Think of it!

Don't ask why did it happen. It happened because people are evil. It also happened because God is lifting His protection from this nation and we must pray and ask Him for revival so that once again we will be His people, the planting of His righteousness, so that He will come to our defense and protect us as a nation. That is what I want to see and why we say we must have revival.

We must have a spiritual revival. The churches need to be full. We must pray for our pastors. We must pray for the churches. We must ask God to send a mighty, powerful revival in the midst of His people. That is what is needed for this land.

I want us to pray right now for America. I want us to pray for you and your families. I want us to pray particularly for those mothers, those fathers, those husbands and wives, those brothers and sisters who have lost loved ones. Their hearts are breaking right now. As they see this thing happen and they say "Why, Why?" And their hearts are broken.

We may find that as many as 20,000 innocent civilians have been killed in this tragedy. We don't know what the full number is yet. It may not be that high, but that is one estimate.

Please join with me as we all pray right now.

Father, we come before You, and we share the pain and the grief of those who are suffering. We saw those people with their little posters held up before TV cameras with the pictures of their loved ones. Surely, you have seen this man. He is 5’10” and he weighs so and so and he’s got a cute smile. Oh, God in heaven, we pray that You would comfort them -- that You will comfort those who suffer and grieve in this manner.

And Lord, we pray for our nation. We have sinned against Almighty God. At the highest level of government we have stuck our finger in Your eye. The Supreme Court has insulted You over and over again, Lord. They have taken Your Bible away from the schools. They have forbidden little children to pray. Organizations have gone to court to take the knowledge of God out of the public squares of America. Then people say, "Why isn't God looking after us."

We have sinned against You, Lord. We ask that You might forgive us. And that You might bring us to the place where we are truly sorry for our sins, and as a Nation we repent before You. And Almighty God, we ask for a spiritual revival, a cleansing of our Nation, a cleansing of the hearts of Your people.

We pray for pastors, anoint them, Lord. We pray, oh God, for the churches. Give them the fire of God. And Lord, may millions come to the knowledge of Jesus Christ. Television evangelists Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson, two of the most prominent voices of the religious right, said liberal civil liberties groups, feminists, homosexuals and abortion rights supporters bear partial responsibility for Tuesday's terrorist attacks because their actions have turned God's anger against America.

"God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve," said Falwell, appearing yesterday on the Christian Broadcasting Network's "700 Club," hosted by Robertson.

"Jerry, that's my feeling," Robertson responded. "I think we've just seen the antechamber to terror. We haven't even begun to see what they can do to the major population."

Falwell said the American Civil Liberties Union has "got to take a lot of blame for this," again winning Robertson's agreement: "Well, yes."

Then Falwell broadened his blast to include the federal courts and others who he said were "throwing God out of the public square." He added: "The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way -- all of them who have tried to secularize America -- I point the finger in their face and say, 'You helped this happen.' "

People for the American Way transcribed the broadcast and denounced the comments as running directly counter to President Bush's call for national unity. Ralph G. Neas, the liberal group's president, called the remarks "absolutely inappropriate and irresponsible."

Robertson and others on the religious right gave critical backing to Bush last year when he was battling for the GOP presidential nomination. A White House official called the remarks "inappropriate" and added, "The president does not share those views."

Falwell was unrepentant, saying in an interview that he was "making a theological statement, not a legal statement."

"I put all the blame legally and morally on the actions of the terrorist," he said. But he said America's "secular and anti-Christian environment left us open to our Lord's [decision] not to protect. When a nation deserts God and expels God from the culture . . . the result is not good."

Robertson was not available for comment, a spokeswoman said. But she released a statement echoing the remarks he made on his show. An ACLU spokeswoman said the group "will not dignify the Falwell-Robertson remarks with a comment."

You'd sure hear the droning if high school kids wanted to pray at a graduation ceremony or a football game. There would be writs and motions and the like.

But you won't hear the complaints this week, will you?

For some reason, people aren't offended much by prayer these days.

Here's another thing you're not hearing.

You're not hearing any carping about religion as an artificial and paternalistic system designed by white guys to impose a rigid hierarchy on women and minorities and the powerless.

Those poor folks under the rubble in New York don't have the power to lift that concrete all by themselves.

If this was a week in April--say the week that kids can officially celebrate something called Earth Day but not Easter--you might hear that kind of complaining against public prayer.

One can't help notice the silence of atheists these days. Suddenly "God" is everywhere, as ubiquitous as American flags, spreading — as Dan Rather said in a spasm of simile-rapture to describe rumors following the Sept. 11 attacks — "like mildew in a damp basement."

War has that effect. There are no atheists in foxholes, we've always known. There were none in the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, we can guess. And now there are none anywhere to be found. America today is about God and country, but then it always has been. We just lost track.

BISHOP CLAIMS ATTACKS 'JUDGEMENT ON WEST'

A BISHOP claims the September 11 attacks were a judgment on the western world.

The Bishop of Winchester, the Rt Rev Michael Scott-Joynt, made the remark to churchgoers during his festive address.

Race relations groups say there could be no justification for the attacks.

Bishop Scott-Joynt, a member of the House of Lords, claimed they were prompted by the divide between the West and the "southern hemisphere", according to a report in the Sun newspaper.

He said: "The last months have been especially full of horror, tragedy, cruelty and foreboding.

"Ask yourself whether things would be as they are had Western-Northern American and European electorates not encouraged our governments to go on developing our standard of living at the expense of millions in the southern hemisphere.

"And if we had not sold their rulers armaments on such favourable terms, and with so little forethought.

"I have come to understand the evil, cruel events of September as a judgment upon us."

Harjap Singh, chairman of the Race Consultative Forum, said: "The Western world owes a lot to Third World countries, but we should not see it as a judgment.

"We should see it as an act of frustration that led people to act like this."
